IN CONCLUSION
The MRC de Deux-Montagnes is part of the Lower Laurentians regions. Industrial activities and commercial and governmental services were grafted onto an economy that was tradionally based on farming activities.
The population of the MRC, which counted 81,415 inhabitants in 2001, is the third most important among the MRCs of the Laurentians region. It reveals a younger profile than the average observed throughout the region.
Saint-Eustache, the main gateway for the region, counts nearly half of the MRC's population. It is the heart of the regional economic activity. Its industrial parks, economic and geographical situations make it the most dynamic town in terms of quality and diversity of employment. The labour market indicators in the MRC de Deux-Montagnes are relatively favourable. The activity and employment ratios are higher than in the Laurentians region, the CMA of Montreal and the province of Quebec.
As in the province of Quebec, the economy of the MRC is characterized by a high presence of small businesses. In 2002, companies with 19 employees or less represented 92% of businesses.
The industrial structure hinges mainly around the secondary sector based on construction and various manufacturing activities, and around services such as wholesale and retail, transport and storage, health and social sevices, education and restaurant industries.
The intra and interregional manpower mobility is important and reflects the economic interdependence of the communities. For example, 46% of the working population residing in the MRC work in Montreal and Laval and a total of more than 60% of the population cross the limits of the MRC to go to work. In the context of the constant increasing road traffic growth, we can suppose that, in spite of a low unemployment ration, there is room to appeal to an important number of workers to move their work place closer to their home. It should also be mentioned that the population of the MRC is younger than that of the entire population of the province of Quebec and the Greater Montreal region, which means that an important mass of workers has yet to arrive.
In 2001, 3,695 single-parent families were living in the MRC, of which 74% were under the responsibility of a woman.
The MRC included, in 2001, 2,605 immigrants, or 3% of the MRC's population. More than tree-quarters of these persones had arrived more than ten years ago.
In 2001, there were 4,030 self-employed persons in the MRC, or 10% of the manpower. they were mostly men. |
